“Sportjugend” is the youth organisation of the state sport association of Berlin. We are the democratic umbrella organisation for sport of children and youths in Berlin and a recognised independent body of youth welfare. Thus we represent the interests of around 220.000 children and young persons in almost 2.000 sports clubs in Berlin as well as being the agency for sports projects and –facilities, of youth welfare, leisure time pedagogic, extracurricular youth training as well as an organiser of international meetings of youngsters.
We are committed to democratic principles, such as the right of consultation and participation of young persons.
Our Approach– Young people at the Centre
* Through sport we support the upbringing of young persons to become self-reliant and sociable personalities.
* We are open to all children and young persons, independent of their origin, colour of skin, religion and ideology.
* We support children and young people in their individual and social development and in this way help to lessen or avoid their disadvantages.
* We create a positive environment for young persons to grow up in and in this way contribute to their healthy upbringing.
* We are committed to an enduring support for children and young persons in the state of Berlin, to sponsor democratic structures and self-organisation in the youth activities of sport and supporting communal self-engagement.
* We sponsor meetings of young persons from all over the world and support mutual understanding.
Challenging and Supporting Young People
We are aware of the positive forces of sport. Sport connects people of varying ideologies, religions and colour of skin. It brings together diverse characters, mentalities and lifestyles. Sport imparts positive values and attitudes – in a playful way. Virtues such as solidarity, tolerance, respect, team spirit, fair play and manners - whether losing or winning – are being developed and strengthened. Sport supports the intellectual and social development of youngsters, improves their ability to concentrate and their motivation. Sport keeps fit and can even heal. In sporting activities we are able to challenge and support young persons.
In short: sport is good for you. This is why we make sport accessible to all young persons in our town – no matter what their origins may be!
Thinking in two Dimensions!
Support for young people in two ways:
On the one hand we support youth welfare in sports clubs and sport associations through the provision of services, finance and training. We strengthen the basis of youth welfare and lend our support to the voluntary co-operators. They are important persons for children and young people to relate to and fulfil responsible, social functions.
On the other hand we support young persons directly in difficult situations. Through projects in social problem areas we reach children and youths, who had not until then found their way into a sports club, but are in need of our help.
Widening the Horizon!
International youth welfare – discovering Europe and the wide world.
We organise and arrange meetings of young people with partner organisations in countries such as Israel, Japan, Poland, Turkey, Russia and France. Through personal meetings of young people, for example at the European meeting site for youth sport on the Baltic island of Usedom we facilitate understanding between different nations and enable young people to get to know other cultures.
